Conscript dies in ATV accident during military exercise in Karelia Brigade

A Finnish conscript has died following an all-terrain vehicle accident during a routine training exercise at the Vekaranjärvi garrison in the Karelia Brigade, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The incident occurred during a daily artillery regiment exercise, according to a statement from the Karelia Brigade. Emergency services and military police were notified immediately.

The next of kin of the deceased conscript have been informed, the brigade said. Crisis support has been arranged for the victim’s fellow servicemembers and personnel present at the scene, with counseling also available to other exercise participants.

In honor of the deceased, the Finnish Defence Forces will fly flags at half-mast at all its facilities on Wednesday.

The Southeast Finland Police Department has launched an investigation into the accident but declined to provide further details at this stage.
