A driver died early Tuesday in a collision between a passenger car and a truck in Nakkila, southwestern Finland, with police suspecting alcohol or drugs may have been a factor, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.

The crash occurred around 3:45 AM on a stretch of road about seven kilometres from Harjavalta toward Nakkila. The passenger car struck the rear of the truck in a centre-divided section of the road, on the lane heading toward Pori.

The passenger car carried two people—the driver, who was killed, and one passenger. The truck had only the driver on board. No other vehicles were involved.

Police are investigating the incident as a case of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and unauthorised use of a vehicle. In a statement, lead investigator Jari Klaus of the Southwest Finland Police Department said evidence from the scene suggests intoxicants may have played a role.

“We are continuing to clarify other possible background factors,” Klaus said. The case will not proceed to prosecution because the suspect has died.

Emergency services responded to the scene, with duty fire chief Tuomas Kiskola of the Satakunta Rescue Department confirming earlier Tuesday that the collision took place in the median-divided section.
