Two drones crash in southeastern Finland as authorities investigate suspected airspace violation
Finnish authorities are investigating after two unmanned drones crashed in Kouvola, southeastern Finland, with one confirmed as a Ukrainian AN196 long-range drone, public broadcaster Yle reports.
The Finnish Air Force stated that at least one of the drones was of Ukrainian origin, following a suspected airspace violation in the region. One drone crashed north of Kouvola, while the second came down east of the city. Police have cordoned off both areas for further examination.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed that all relevant agencies are addressing the situation, with civilian sightings also reported in southeastern Finland. The Air Force deployed an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet for identification tasks.
Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen described the incident as serious, noting that future decisions on intercepting drones would be evaluated case by case. The Finnish Border Guard’s Gulf of Finland maritime unit is leading the preliminary investigation, with authorities cooperating closely.
A separate drone, deemed a harmless civilian model, was found on sea ice in Espoo’s Haukilahden district on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities are scheduled to hold a press briefing at 18:30 local time.
