Tampere’s busiest park-and-ride facility in Hiedanranta often runs out of spaces on weekday mornings, with all spots taken by 8:30 am on Wednesdays, public broadcaster Yle reports after monitoring the area over three days.

The 130-space lot, located near tram and bus stops on the city’s western side, is a key transfer point for commuters switching from cars to public transport. Demand has led to complaints, prompting the city to expand capacity by 90 spaces this autumn, bringing the total to 220.

On Monday mornings, the lot remained under half-full even at 7:45 am, with drivers noting that arriving by 8 am usually guarantees a spot. By Tuesday, however, the last standard spaces were taken by 9 am, leaving only electric vehicle charging spots empty. Wednesdays proved the busiest—by 7:45 am, most spaces were occupied, and the final spot was claimed just after 8 am.

Deputy Mayor Ilkka Porttikivi (SDP) confirmed the expansion will begin as soon as conditions allow, with completion expected this autumn. He also proposed adding real-time occupancy updates to the city’s Nysi journey planner, similar to the existing system at the Niihama park-and-ride on Tampere’s eastern side. Currently, parking at both lots remains free, though time limits apply (12 hours in Hiedanranta, 24 in Niihama).

While no plans exist to introduce fees, Porttikivi noted discussions about linking parking validation to public transport tickets. Tampere and its neighbouring municipalities operate 16 park-and-ride lots, with more planned as tram routes expand.
