A recurring shift in voter support between the Faroese Union Party (Fólkaflokkurin) and Republic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) has decided multiple parliamentary elections, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Since 2011, the two parties have alternated as the larger of the two in every election. In 2011, the Union Party secured more votes than the Republic Party, only for the Republic Party to overtake it in 2015. The pattern reversed again in 2019, flipped back in 2022, and in last year’s election, the Union Party once more emerged as the larger party.
The swings have grown so pronounced that they now appear decisive in shaping election outcomes, influencing coalition-building possibilities and the direction of Faroese politics.
Though often framed as ideological opposites—the Union Party advocating closer ties with Denmark and the Republic Party pushing for Faroese independence—the voter shifts suggest a more fluid political landscape than party platforms might imply.
