A Finnish court has fined a motorist for endangering traffic safety after he collided with a Russian consulate official who was cycling in Mariehamn, Åland, last June, Yle reports.

The Åland District Court ordered the driver to pay 30 day-fines, totalling €720 based on his income. After accounting for two days already served in pre-trial detention, the remaining penalty amounts to 28 day-fines (€672).

The incident began when the driver allegedly approached the cyclist—a Russian consul leaving the consulate grounds—on the wrong side of the road, attempting to get his attention by gesturing and honking. The cyclist accelerated, and the driver followed, resulting in a minor collision at an intersection. The consul reported leg pain and contacted emergency services during the confrontation, stating he felt harassed.

While the driver denied criminal intent, he admitted to making a U-turn and following the cyclist while trying to draw attention. Surveillance footage corroborated parts of the account. The court deemed the fine sufficient, though the ruling is not yet legally binding.

The case was investigated by Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (KRP).
