Applications for information technology and communications programs have dropped by over 18 percent in Finland’s spring joint admissions round, while arts and culture studies gained 6 percent more applicants, according to data released by the Finnish National Agency for Education.

The sharp decline in IT applications contrasts with modest changes in other fields, where shifts typically remained within a few percentage points. Meanwhile, arts and culture—often viewed as a less stable career path due to recent government funding cuts—saw increased interest despite financial uncertainty.

Theatre studies see surge in applicants
At Turku University of Applied Sciences, the theatre expression instructor program attracted 64 first-choice applicants, up from 42 last year. Eero Linjama, head of performing arts and music education, called the trend encouraging after years of declining numbers following the pandemic.

“Creativity and human interaction in the arts can’t be replaced by AI,” Linjama said, noting that graduates often find diverse career opportunities, including teaching. He dismissed concerns about job prospects, arguing that the program’s blend of artistic and pedagogical training equips students for adaptable careers.

Tampere University sees minor dip in computer science
At Tampere University, applications for computer science programs declined slightly, though Erja Sipilä, dean of education for IT and communications, described the change as part of normal annual variation. She emphasized that the field remains vital, producing experts capable of leveraging AI in future roles.

“Our graduates will be professionals who can use AI intelligently in their work,” Sipilä said, addressing public debate about AI’s impact on the sector.

The spring admissions round offered roughly 56,000 study places, with 70 percent reserved for first-time applicants. Results based on academic records will be announced in late May, with most entrance exams held afterward. Final admissions decisions will be published by early July.
