Keminmatkailu, a tourism company owned by the city of Kemijärvi, is investigating plans to expand its icebreaker cruise operations to Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, according to a report by Finnish broadcaster Yle.

The company, which operates two icebreakers—Sampo and Arctis—has seen strong financial results from its existing cruise business, reporting a profit of nearly €1 million last year. Now, it is assessing the feasibility of offering day cruises and floating Arctic experiences in Svalbard during the summer months.

CEO Jaakko Löppönen confirmed that the company is conducting a thorough review of operational and regulatory requirements, including safety standards and international compliance. However, any cruises in Svalbard would not involve actual icebreaking, as the region’s sea ice is protected due to its fragile ecosystem.

The expansion plans are part of the company’s broader growth strategy, which also includes potential changes to its ownership structure. Keminmatkailu has been collaborating with international tour operators to explore new markets beyond its current winter-season operations in the Gulf of Bothnia.
