All eligible voters in the Faroe Islands have the right to cast their ballot, and polling stations are equipped to accommodate those with special needs, reports Kringvarp Føroya.

The right to vote is legally protected, and measures are in place to ensure accessibility for all. “This is not only a right but also crucial for those who rely on assistance,” said Katrin Jacobæus, managing director of Javna, an organisation advocating for equal rights.

Accessibility for all
Anyone requiring assistance to vote has the right to receive it, regardless of their needs. This includes voters using wheelchairs, who are entitled to extra space and a lower table in the polling booth. It also applies to those with visual impairments, who may request help reading the ballot inside the booth.

Voters can ask polling station staff for support, including entering the booth with them. They may also bring a trusted person for assistance. For wheelchair users, polling stations must be accessible. If a voter cannot enter the building, they have the right to cast their ballot outside in their vehicle. Those unable to request help at the polling station should contact their local municipality in advance.

Voting from home
Today, Faroese voters are electing representatives to the Danish parliament (Folketing). On Thursday, the Faroese parliamentary election (Løgting) will take place, requiring another trip to the polls. However, those unable to vote in person can do so from home.

While the deadline for remote voting in the Folketing election has passed, applications for the Løgting election can still be submitted until Wednesday, 25 March. Voters must contact their municipality to arrange home assistance.
