Local radio interview prompts politician to reconsider welfare reform stance

A direct question from a listener during a live radio interview nearly led a Danish politician to reverse her position on a controversial welfare reform, DR reports.

Social Democrat MP Mette Reissmann, a member of the Employment Committee, was challenged on air by a caller who asked whether she would support scrapping a proposed reform if new data showed it would worsen poverty among children. Reissmann initially hesitated but ultimately stated she would “have to consider” changing her stance if evidence clearly demonstrated harm to vulnerable groups.

The exchange occurred during DR P1’s morning program, where politicians regularly face unscripted questions from the public. The welfare reform in question has faced criticism from opposition parties and advocacy groups, who argue it could push more families into financial hardship.

Reissmann later clarified that while she remains supportive of the reform’s goals, she would not ignore “clear, documented consequences” for children living in poverty. Her comments come as parliament prepares for a final vote on the proposal in the coming weeks.
