A court in Finland has issued a permanent ban on keeping animals and a suspended prison sentence to a woman after ten dead dogs and ten severely neglected live dogs were discovered in her home, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

Satakunta District Court ruled on Friday that the woman, approximately 30 years old, demonstrated “complete indifference” to the animals’ suffering. She was convicted of aggravated animal welfare offences and other violations related to animal care, receiving a suspended prison sentence of one year and eight months.

The neglect came to light during an animal welfare inspection in August 2022, though the abuse is believed to have occurred earlier this decade. Inspectors found decomposing dog carcasses and dozens of kilograms of accumulated feces in the woman’s home, where she had failed to provide long-term care for the animals.

The court described the woman’s actions as “brutal and cruel,” showing total disregard for the dogs’ distress. She admitted to the charges, which also included two counts of fraud. The permanent ban on keeping animals was justified by the severity of the offences.

A supervising veterinarian was also fined for negligence after receiving multiple reports about the poor conditions at the woman’s address as early as 2022 but delaying an inspection until August of that year. The court found that the veterinarian’s failure to act promptly contributed to the prolonged suffering of the dogs.

Both rulings can be appealed to higher courts.
