Finnish government proposes extended deadline for welfare regions to cover deficits
The Finnish government has proposed extending the deadline for welfare regions to cover their accumulated deficits, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.
Under the proposal, the ministry could grant certain regions an extension until the end of 2029 to address their financial shortfalls, provided it is necessary for compliance with legal requirements. Regions would need to apply for the extension, with the final decision resting with the Ministry of Finance.
The length of any extension would depend on each region’s financial situation and the feasibility of their approved plan to eliminate the deficit, the ministry stated. The extended deadline would apply only to a limited number of regions unlikely to balance their budgets by 2026, 2027, or 2028.
Welfare regions in Finland are responsible for organising social, healthcare, and rescue services. Several have faced financial difficulties since their establishment in 2023 as part of a major reform of the country’s health and social services system.
