Faroese housing agency says public sector cannot solve housing crisis alone
The Faroese public housing sector cannot address the housing shortage by itself, according to Niels Winther, director of the government-owned housing agency Vinnuhúsið, as reported by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Winther stressed that both public and private housing construction must work in parallel to meet demand. “The housing shortage is so severe that the public sector alone cannot solve it,” he said. He argued that the government should balance competition between public and private builders to create better and fairer conditions for housing development.
The agency’s statement follows election campaign debates where some have proposed that public housing should only target specific groups, such as young people, students, the elderly, or those with special needs. Winther rejected this approach, calling it damaging to broader housing policy.
