A Faroese high school teacher has been recognised for his work in strengthening student interest in natural sciences, with a prestigious award from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Johann Jansson Petersen, a natural sciences teacher at Eysturskúlin in Tórshavn, will receive the award for his efforts in making science education more engaging and for inspiring young people in the Faroe Islands to pursue studies in the field.

The foundation highlighted Petersen’s role in establishing a dedicated natural sciences programme at the school, which has attracted more students to advanced science courses. His students also participate in competitions such as First Lego League and innovation contests, further fostering their enthusiasm.

The award, presented during the Big Bang science conference in Odense, includes a personal honour prize of 50,000 Danish kroner. Additionally, the recipient’s institution will receive between 150,000 and 500,000 kroner to support further development.

In its statement, the Novo Nordisk Foundation emphasised Petersen’s success in “igniting a passion for natural sciences among future generations” through innovative teaching methods.
