Helsinki Festival’s iconic Huvila venue to close for two years due to park renovation
The Huvila venue, a long-standing hub for light music at the Helsinki Festival, will not be erected in 2027 and 2028 due to major renovation work at Tokoinranta park, festival organisers announced on Monday.
Designed by architect Roy Mänttäri, the Huvila pavilion has served as a landmark venue for pop and rock performances during the festival for over 30 years, offering a mix of concert hall and traditional festival tent facilities. The structure, complete with restaurant tents, has been assembled annually at Eläintarhantie in Hakaniemi since 1995.
Artistic director Johanna Freundlich acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating in a release: “This forced hiatus raises questions that need resolving, as temporary relocations always do. Our goal is to ensure the musical genres typically featured at Huvila remain part of the festival programme.”
The Helsinki Festival will next take place from 18 August to 5 September 2026. While performance venues and formats have varied throughout the event’s history, organisers confirmed that light music will continue to feature in future editions.
For local residents, the Huvila pavilion has become a symbolic fixture of summer evenings in the city.
