Finnish labour market groups agree on Nikolas Elomaa as next national conciliator
Finnish trade unions and employer organisations have selected Nikolas Elomaa as their joint candidate for the role of national conciliator, SAK chair Jarkko Eloranta confirmed to public broadcaster Yle on Monday.
The nomination follows a consensus between labour market parties, with both employee and employer representatives endorsing Elomaa’s candidacy. Under the established rotation system, this selection cycle fell to the employee side.
Elomaa currently serves as a senior specialist at the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority and holds a law degree. His background includes leadership roles in pension advocacy at Tela and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK). Eloranta highlighted Elomaa’s extensive experience in labour market organisations, combined with his recent distance from direct negotiations, as key strengths.
“Nikolas is a seasoned labour market professional who has worked in various roles within unions and central organisations but has also been away from direct labour disputes for a considerable time,” Eloranta said. “His legal expertise and long experience provide the formal qualifications needed for the role.”
The Finnish government will formally appoint the national conciliator after the position is publicly advertised. The current conciliator, Anu Sajavaara, will conclude her term in August and has chosen not to seek reappointment.
