Iceland’s president, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, playfully remarked that “people just love Mario” during a meeting with Nintendo executives in Reykjavík, reports RÚV. The comment came as the Japanese gaming giant visited Iceland to explore potential collaborations with local tech and creative industries.

Jóhannesson welcomed Nintendo’s senior management, including company president Shuntaro Furukawa, at Bessastaðir, the official presidential residence. The visit follows growing interest in Iceland’s gaming sector, which has seen expansion in recent years with studios like CCP Games and others gaining international recognition.

The president’s lighthearted reference to Mario—Nintendo’s iconic mascot—highlighted the cultural impact of the company’s franchises. While no formal agreements were announced, discussions reportedly focused on Iceland’s strengths in game development, renewable energy for data centres, and creative talent.

Nintendo has previously partnered with Icelandic firms, including the use of Icelandic landscapes in games like Pokémon Sword and Shield. The visit suggests potential for deeper ties between the company and Iceland’s tech ecosystem.
