A convicted gang member was detained near Oslo’s synagogue last week after police discovered a firearm and battery acid, a precursor for explosives, in his vehicle, Dagbladet reports.

The 48-year-old man, previously convicted of serious crimes, was arrested around 12:30 PM last Friday near the St. Hanshaugen synagogue in central Oslo. Two other men were also detained in what police described as a major operation. Authorities have confirmed the suspects were in possession of both a firearm and materials that could be used to manufacture explosives.

“We refer to our earlier statement and will not comment further at this stage to avoid compromising the investigation,” said Joacim Paulsen, head of the prosecution section at Oslo Police District.

The man, who was working as a carpet layer at a property near the synagogue, was recognised by officers patrolling the area. A search of his vehicle reportedly uncovered battery acid and a weapon. Following the arrest, police conducted raids at multiple locations, including the suspect’s home, though authorities have declined to provide further details.

The man has been remanded in custody for two weeks in solitary confinement. The Oslo District Court’s detention order remains confidential, but Dagbladet independently confirmed key details of the case.

Defence attorney Trygve Staff, representing one of the co-accused, declined to comment. The primary suspect is represented by lawyer Sidra Bhatti of the Rogstad law firm, who was unavailable for statement.

While Norway’s Police Security Service (PST) was routinely notified, investigators have stated there is currently “no evidence to suggest threats or attacks against the synagogue or Jewish interests.”
