Faroese centre-right party leads outside capital ahead of election

The centre-right People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin) holds a strong lead outside the Faroese capital Tórshavn ahead of the 26 March general election, while the left-wing Republic (Tjóðveldi) dominates in the city, a new voter survey shows.

The poll, conducted by Spørj.fo for Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya and news site Portal.fm, reveals significant voter shifts compared to the 2022 election. Many supporters of the centrist Progress Party (Framsókn), the Centre Party (Miðflokkurin), and the Social Democrats (Javnaðarflokkurin) now appear dissatisfied with their traditional parties.

Only 42% of Progress Party voters from 2022 say they will back the party again, while just 44% of Centre Party and Social Democrat voters plan to do the same. Meanwhile, 22% of Progress supporters and 17% of Social Democrat supporters remain undecided.

**People’s Party gains from Centre and Union parties**
The survey shows 41% of former Centre Party voters now intend to switch to the People’s Party, while 14% of Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin) voters are also moving to Fólkaflokkurin. The People’s Party also gains 10% of former Social Democrat voters, while 13% of those now back the Union Party.

The Progress Party’s losses appear to benefit both Republic and the People’s Party, with 11% and 9% of its 2022 voters shifting to those parties, respectively. The People’s Party retains strong loyalty, with 72% of its 2022 voters planning to support it again, though 10% now favour the Social Democrats.

**Regional and demographic divides**
Outside Tórshavn, the People’s Party leads with 37% support—12 percentage points higher than in 2022—followed by the Union Party (21%), Social Democrats (17%), and Republic (13%). In the capital, however, Republic holds a commanding lead, with one in four voters backing the party. The Social Democrats follow with 22%, while the People’s Party and Union Party each have 18%, and Progress sits at 13%.

The Social Democrats have lost significant ground in Tórshavn, dropping 9 points since 2022, while the People’s Party has gained 7 points. Gender differences are also notable: nearly one in three men support the People’s Party, compared to one in five women. Among younger voters (18–44), 31% back the People’s Party, while older voters (45–80) show stronger support for the Union Party and Social Democrats.
