Kindergarten in wolf area: We sing ‘Bager Bro’ if it comes
Authorities warn against children under ten years old moving alone in nature in areas of West Jutland. A kindergarten in Oksbøl already has a plan if the wolf comes.
Kindergarten leader Helene Dueholm has a plan if the wolf comes close to the children during an excursion. Then they sing the song ‘Bager Bro’. “It’s a song the children know, and when 15-17 children clap and make noise, it scares the wolf away, and then we can retreat,” says Helene Dueholm.
Authorities emphasize that there is no acute danger of wolves attacking humans, says Jens Skovager Østergaard, head of unit at the Directorate for Green Area Redevelopment and Water Environment. “The authorities’ attention is due to the development of inappropriate behavior that creates unease for the local population. To avoid unsafe episodes for children under 10 in the area, it is recommended that they move in nature with adults until we have regulated the wolves.”
In the kindergarten in Oksbøl, they have not yet seen a wolf. The children are not afraid, says daycare leader Helene Dueholm. “It’s the same as with other animals. We move out into nature as we always have. We are always there where the children are, no matter what they might encounter, whether it’s wolves, water, or something else.”
