Government holds annual summer meeting in Höfn

Iceland’s government held its annual summer meeting in Höfn and surrounding areas, concluding the event on Friday, mbl.is reported.

At a working meeting on Thursday, ministers reviewed the government’s priorities for the coming parliamentary session and discussed the state of the economy, the labour market and European affairs.

The government also met representatives of Hornafjörður municipality, Skaftárhreppur municipality and the Association of South Iceland Municipalities at Nýheimar in Höfn. Topics included Vatnajökull National Park, education, employment and transport in southeast Iceland.

A government meeting was held at Fosshótel Vatnajökull on Friday morning. The programme ended with ministers visiting companies and institutions in the region and attending the opening of an extension to the Skjólgarður nursing home.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said it had been a pleasure to bring the government to Hornafjörður for a working meeting, adding that the visit had been planned for some time. She said the government had held productive discussions with local people about opportunities in southeast Iceland and further development, including after the opening of a new bridge over Hornafjarðarfljót, the nursing home extension and planned extensive harbour works in Höfn.

Frostadóttir also said the government had reviewed the main parliamentary issues for the winter and would be well prepared for the new session.
