Google is exploring the possibility of establishing data centers in Kajaani and Muhos, although a final investment decision has not yet been reached. A public meeting was held on December 3, during which the Otanmäki–Humpinsuon local zoning plan was discussed, integrating provisions for data center operations. Representatives from Google attended the event, expressing their commitment to collaborating with local stakeholders throughout the planning phases.

Currently, Google is focused on zoning the acquired land amounts while fostering positive relations with the community, as residents eagerly anticipate working together. The Otanmäki–Humpinsuon zoning plan, which was initiated in October, aims to facilitate data center functionalities, related infrastructure, and potentially use waste heat from the centers for other local operations. The goal is to establish state-of-the-art data centers in the region.

Jukka Vainonen, director of the Hamina data center, highlighted the effective practices already in place at their facility, suggesting these could serve as a model for development in Kajaani and Muhos. However, he noted that the proposals presented are still in the conceptual phase, and specifics regarding the next steps post-zoning will be clarified at a later date.

Residents at the meeting expressed a desire for open dialogue with Google and transparency about the project’s progression and its potential impacts on the community. Many voiced concerns over the lack of information, as discussions regarding the project have been ongoing for two years.

Google officials have been refining data center plans for the past 15 months and intend to hold further meetings with the community in December or January to gather local insights, particularly on vital issues like nature trails in the proposed zones. According to their plans, Google aims to designate 25 percent of the land acquired from Otanmäki for conservation and recreational uses.
