The municipality of Pyhäjoki is collaborating with Hypercon on a significant data center project, having reached a preliminary agreement for nearly 130 hectares of land acquisition. Highlighting the importance of this partnership, the local mayor views it as a substantial opportunity for the region.

According to Hypercon’s Chief Financial Officer, this site marks the company’s largest development venture to date. The zoning process for the data center area is expected to take about a year, during which the final scope of the project and potential users will become clear.

The municipality has tentatively agreed to purchase approximately 130 hectares of land, valued at around €2.4 million. The mayor indicated that the developable area might expand beyond the initial figures, stating that the zoning will be aligned with the company’s requirements. This venture represents a shift for Pyhäjoki, which has primarily focused on electricity production, now pivoting towards electricity utilization.

The chosen site, located roughly 15 kilometers east of the municipal center, benefits from excellent electricity connectivity, which is essential given the ongoing data center trends in Northern Finland, such as Google’s projects in nearby regions.

Hypercon specializes in developing and operating data centers, with other projects in major Finnish cities, but the Pyhäjoki site offers a considerably larger space. The interest in this area is high, with ongoing discussions with several larger operators, indicating a promising outlook for the local data center market. It is anticipated that more data center developments will be announced in Finland, as the country proves to be an attractive option for companies looking for data center capacity due to its renewable energy resources and well-developed grid infrastructure.
