Iceland’s Social Democratic Alliance wins largest share in 2024 elections reshaping political landscape
The 2024 elections have marked a significant shift in Iceland’s political landscape. The Social Democratic Alliance emerged as the largest party in Parliament, securing 15 seats following an eventful election night marked by celebrations as early results rolled in. The Icelandic Independence Party, despite predicting losses, managed to perform slightly better than expected but saw a reduction in representation, ending up with 14 seats, down from previous elections.
The People’s Party has emerged in a strong position, increasing its presence in Parliament to 10 members, while the Progressive Party experienced its worst election results ever, securing only 5 seats nationally, marking a decline of 8 seats.
Notably, the Left-Green Movement and the Pirate Party have lost representation entirely, failing to win any seats; this is the first time in history the Left-Greens have not gained a parliamentary seat. The new election results signal potentially transformative changes, with a coalition government being a distinct possibility involving the Social Democratic Alliance, the People’s Party, and the Independence Party.
Discussions among party leaders have indicated that negotiations are forthcoming. The Progressive Party’s leader expressed concerns about the formation of a government potentially influenced by EU policies, suggesting a challenging political climate ahead.
As the final counts come in, the political dynamics in Parliament are likely to shift, with parties preparing for the coalition discussions that will shape Iceland’s governance in the years to come.
