Google plans data centers in Kajaani and Muhos, Finland to boost operations

Google is planning to establish data centers in Kajaani and Muhos, a move driven by various factors including energy availability, workforce access, and suitable construction sites. Antti Järvinen, Google’s country manager for Finland, emphasized the importance of supportive local communities in this decision. He expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, citing successful experiences in Hamina and highlighting opportunities to grow operations in Finland.

However, specific details regarding the data centers in Kajaani and Muhos remain undisclosed. Järvinen mentioned that they are currently working through necessary issues before moving forward, which has affected the flow of information. He noted that the new centers could mirror the highly efficient data center in Hamina, which has undergone multiple expansions since its inception in 2011.

Estimates suggest that the new facilities could potentially be larger than those in Hamina, with some sources predicting investments could reach around a billion euros for each center. Google’s land acquisitions in these areas total approximately 14 square kilometers, providing ample space for future development and indicating a commitment to long-term planning.

Additionally, the proximity of renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, alongside existing infrastructure for electricity supply, makes Kajaani and Muhos attractive locations as they aim for climate-neutral operations by 2030.

While the actual start of operations could take several years due to regulatory processes, including environmental assessments and obtaining permissions, local officials are hopeful that streamlined processes could shorten delays. Google’s future data centers are expected to create numerous job opportunities in the region, further bolstering local economies.
