A tram accident occurred on Friday afternoon at Sammonaukio in Tampere. A passenger had exited the tram and was attempting to cross the tracks when another tram, coming from the adjacent line, struck the individual. The incident took place shortly before 3 PM, according to operational chief Vesa Rauhala from VR. Fortunately, it appears the passenger did not sustain any injuries.

Witnesses reported that the passenger dashed across the platform directly into the path of the other tram and was knocked back onto the platform as a result of the collision. Remarkably, the passenger was able to walk away from the scene without apparent harm.

As a consequence of the incident, tram line 1 experienced delays and cancellations due to the need to investigate the situation and replace the tram driver. VR has established protocols to handle situations involving personal injuries, which include removing the driver from service for discussion and potential referral to occupational health services for expert consultations.

Rauhala noted that collisions between people and trams are rare as drivers are typically able to anticipate situations. However, he acknowledged that such incidents do occasionally occur. He pointed out a concerning trend of individuals not paying attention to their surroundings, often distracted by their phones, which leads to near misses happening on a weekly basis.

During this disruption, bus 18 rerouted to assist passengers, identified as line 18R. This bus will stop at designated bus stops along the tram route while continuing its normal service between Atala and Kauppi campuses.
