Recent assessments from the Lintuhytin area in Tampere indicate no harmful compounds present in samples collected following a fire at a waste treatment facility in Rusko. The analyses from a sandbox in Lintuhytin Park and surfaces inside and outside nearby homes revealed only safe levels of substances for health. Some outdoor samples did show slightly elevated levels of metals and PAHs, but concentrations indoors were lower.

Residents were concerned about potential pollution stemming from the significant fire at the Remeo plant earlier this month, which produced hazardous smoke for ten days. To ensure safety, dust samples were collected from various locations, including the park’s playground sand and building surfaces, alongside control samples from areas unaffected by smoke.

Health protection officials, in collaboration with experts from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, reviewed the test results. According to the authorities, the identified levels pose no health risks. The local government had already advised residents on cleaning homes and changing air filter systems to mitigate any potential contamination.

The sandbox sand in Lintuhytin Park is scheduled for replacement despite tests indicating no elevated levels, as a precaution against possible contamination. While slightly higher concentrations of metals and PAHs were noted in outdoor samples, officials stated the findings correlate with typical environmental levels and are not considered a threat. Additionally, interior samples yielded even lower concentrations than those taken from the outside, ensuring that residents’ safety remains a priority.
