An increasing number of college students in Finland are meeting physical activity guidelines, yet they also spend excessive time online, according to a health study involving 3,600 students aged 18 to 34. The research indicates that over half of these students engage in both endurance and strength training, with compliance rising from 46% in 2021 to 55% by 2024. An expert suggests that the uptick in physical activity may be linked to improved access to exercise facilities post-pandemic.

Despite this positive trend in exercise, students are largely sedentary, with approximately one-third sitting for at least twelve hours a day during the week. Weight gain has also become more prevalent among students, similar to trends seen in the general population. The study found that weight gain tends to increase with age and is more common among students of applied sciences compared to those at universities. Healthy lifestyle choices, including good nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, are highlighted as crucial factors in preventing obesity.

On another note, about half of the surveyed students report excessive internet use, with women particularly embracing online activities. Authorities warn that heavy internet and social media usage can impair academic performance and heighten various health risks. Additionally, nicotine pouches have surged in popularity among male students since their market liberalization, with 18% of male students in applied sciences using them. Although less common, women are beginning to adopt this trend as well. Meanwhile, the use of alcohol and drugs among students has either declined or remained stable in recent years.
