Mental Health Services at Landspítalinn introduce a new initiative aimed at supporting individuals with mental health issues. The initiative focuses on enabling patients to self-assess their need for hospitalization, intending to reduce visits to emergency psychiatric units and prevent the escalation of more severe conditions.

Known as user-directed supportive admission, this method allows individuals to recognize when their mental health is deteriorating and request hospitalization. Patients are encouraged to judge their own conditions and indicate when they feel intervention is necessary, leading to a short-term, focused stay designed for recovery.

This service primarily targets people experiencing significant emotional instability, including those who self-harm or exhibit suicidal behavior, possibly in relation to substance abuse. Notably, it does not cater to individuals with severe conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, although there are aspirations to extend this service to those groups in the future.

By shifting the focus to earlier intervention, the program aims to diminish the reliance on emergency admissions, which often occur when situations have escalated to critical levels needing immediate and sometimes coercive actions.

The overall goal is to empower patients, allowing them a sense of control over their lives and alleviating their suffering. The method, already successfully implemented in neighboring countries, aspires to enhance overall mental well-being by giving individuals the tools to seek help before reaching a crisis point.
