Stylist Kjetil-André Ward shares experience of sexual abuse and its impact on victims in Norway
Stylist and influencer Kjetil-André Ward recently revealed that he was a victim of sexual abuse in 2008. He expressed the profound impact that media coverage of abuse cases can have on victims. “I believe it means a lot. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be believed, which is part of the reason I waited so long to share my story,” he mentioned.
Anette Kjeldstedt, director of a regional support center for sexual abuse victims, noted a surge in calls to their services correlating with media stories about sexual assault. She explained that high-profile cases often trigger distressing emotions for individuals with past experiences of abuse.
Rannveig Kvifte Andresen, another support center director, affirmed the recent increase in inquiries, especially during the heightened media attention on cases involving multiple victims. The Frosta case, for instance, where a health professional faces charges for assaulting numerous patients, has shocked and resonated widely.
Ward shared that a conversation with a close friend prompted him to confront his own trauma, realizing the importance of speaking out about such experiences. He believes that openness is crucial, as many survivors feel isolated and ashamed. When individuals see others share similar experiences, it can provide solace and reduce feelings of shame.
Kjeldstedt emphasized that having someone to converse with is essential in the healing process, highlighting the vital role of support services for those grappling with their trauma. She noted that many callers report feeling unsupported by public services and are grateful for the help that they receive from specialized organizations. Increased media attention, according to Andresen, can encourage victims to seek assistance, reinforcing the importance of ongoing dialogue surrounding these issues.
