Authorities conclude investigation into tragic drowning incident at Kuusijärvi in Vantaa
Authorities in Vantaa have concluded their preliminary investigation into a tragic drowning incident at Kuusijärvi. The police have identified the parents of the children involved as suspects, facing potential charges of neglect, manslaughter, and causing bodily harm. Swim attendants and bystanders present during the event are not suspected of any wrongdoing.
In the unfortunate incident, two children, aged 4 and 7, were found unresponsive in the water. Lifeguards, along with two bystanders trained in first aid, attempted lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, the 7-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries, while his 4-year-old sister sustained serious injuries.
The police have indicated that neglect refers to situations where caregivers, who have a responsibility for their children, fail to supervise them adequately, thus posing a risk to their safety or health. The parents have stated during the investigation that there were prior agreements among themselves regarding the children’s supervision at the beach.
Authorities have gathered substantial evidence, including footage from surveillance cameras and testimonies from individuals who were present during the incident, according to police inspector Krista Vallila. The health status of the injured 4-year-old remains confidential.
Due to the significant public interest surrounding this case, police officials have committed to providing updates. The incident has prompted widespread concern and discussions on the supervision of non-swimmers near water. With the preliminary investigation now complete, the matter will be passed on to the prosecutor for further legal assessment.
