Years ago on Klostergade, there existed a monastery and its accompanying graveyard, a historical aspect of what is now regarded as the central area of Kolding. As construction crews operate heavy machinery, archaeologists from the local museum remain vigilant on-site, poised to halt excavation should any remains or artifacts surface.

The likelihood of uncovering skeletons and bones in this locality isn’t surprising, but the archaeologists are eager to discover what lies beneath. “It’s quite common for medieval towns; items weren’t typically moved. When a monastery or graveyard was demolished, development usually took place right above it,” explains the museum inspector.

The potential for significant finds in Kolding is substantial. Despite ongoing construction activities like basement digs and pipe installations, a wealth of archaeological treasures is anticipated to emerge from the ground. The remains found could be instrumental in providing insights into the medieval city’s layout and lifestyle.

The archaeologists hope to delineate the boundaries of the graveyard associated with a Franciscan monastery that once thrived in this area. According to the inspector, every discovery acts as a crucial piece of a larger historical puzzle that the team is determined to solve.
