The Kanta-Häme District Court has ruled that a man from Riihimäki, who killed his mother, is not criminally responsible for his actions. As a result, the court decided against imposing a sentence on him. Earlier, the court had determined that the man intentionally took his mother’s life, as outlined in the charges against him. He underwent a psychiatric evaluation in May. In its latest ruling, the court categorized the act as manslaughter committed without criminal intent, consequently opting not to impose a penalty.

According to local reports, the man is currently undergoing involuntary psychiatric treatment following a decision by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare about two weeks ago. He was ordered to pay €7,500 in damages to two victims, which includes delayed interest.

The prosecutor is pushing for a life sentence for the man in connection with a homicide that occurred on New Year’s Day 2024 in Riihimäki. The incident took place in the same residence where the man lived with his mother, following a verbal altercation. The prosecutor’s account states that the man knocked his mother to the kitchen floor, struck her on the head, strangled her, and subsequently stabbed her. Afterward, he reportedly waited by her side for about eight hours to ensure her death. He called emergency services later that day.

While the man denied committing murder, he admitted to killing his mother. The district court’s ruling is not yet final.
