In the village of Menkijärvi, students are being picked up directly from their homes for school due to a significant number of wolf sightings in Alajärvi, located in South Ostrobothnia. The decision was made early this week in response to parents’ concerns about safety.

According to local authorities, wolf sightings have been reported consistently throughout the autumn. Vesa Kantola, the head of education services, mentioned that the special transport arrangements will affect about ten students. He noted that wildlife cameras and tracks have confirmed the concerns of residents, leading to the rerouting of school transport to minimize long distances to bus stops. In some cases, students are indeed being collected right from their doorsteps.

Kantola emphasized that this is a temporary measure. This week, they will assess whether the special arrangements need to continue. So far, indications suggest there may not be a need for a long-term solution, but this arrangement will remain in place until a thorough investigation is complete.

The municipality is currently conducting a comprehensive risk assessment of the wolf situation in coordination with experts from the Natural Resources Institute Finland and local large predator coordinators. The city plans to make a final decision on continued transportation practices based on the findings by the end of the week.

Alajärvi’s school transportation strategy allows for swift special arrangements in response to large predator sightings, provided there are clear risks identified by the local hunting association or other experts. Kantola expressed empathy for parents’ concerns, acknowledging how understandable it is to worry about a child walking alone in the dark, while also reminding them that large predators are a natural part of Finland’s wildlife. These encounters with humans are very rare.
