Oil pipelines near Faroe Islands increase likelihood of exploration within territory

Oil pipelines located just a few kilometers from the Faroe Islands’ border are increasing the likelihood of exploration within Faroese territory.

The pipelines close to the border include Rosebank, situated only 11 kilometers away, and Cambo, which is just 5 kilometers from the line.

Cambo is currently awaiting approval from UK authorities for its development, while Rosebank is moving forward with production expansion. This information has been relayed to the finance committee by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

With oil production commencing from both Rosebank and Cambo, there is a possibility that oil companies will extend their search for additional hydrocarbons into surrounding areas, potentially including Faroese waters.

Currently, the tax rate on hydrocarbon production stands at 78 percent in the UK. A challenge for the Faroe Islands arises from the tightening regulations that could inhibit hydrocarbon activities in British waters, leading to concerns that the search for new oil resources may stagnate.

There are instances where several oil pipelines fall just outside Faroese territory, which could limit opportunities. However, this scenario might benefit the Faroe Islands, as companies may seek alternatives elsewhere to escape the high UK tax rates.
