Hockey clubs Ilves and Tappara condemn violence following derby incidents in Tampere
Hockey clubs Ilves and Tappara, along with their supporter groups, have strongly condemned the incidents that followed the local derby on Friday. The organizations stated that they maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward violence. The sanctions for those involved in the disturbances will be “strict and severe,” according to the statement.
Following the Tappara–Ilves match, confrontations occurred outside the arena, with some individuals ignoring the requests of security personnel and police to disperse. Authorities arrested nine people, who were released on Saturday. While police initially classified the events as a riot, there are indications they may abandon this designation.
The lead investigator, Crime Commissioner Jari Luoto from the Päijät-Häme police, reported that charges have been filed for three assaults, one instance of resisting a public official, and one act of obstruction against a public servant.
In their statement, the clubs and supporter associations have denounced violent behavior as fundamentally opposed to their activities, emphasizing that the primary aim of supporter groups is to back their respective teams. The statement was endorsed by four supporter factions: Osasto 41, Ilves Ikuisesti ry, Tappara Fan Club, and Sinioranssit, which are among the largest in Finland.
While the majority adhere to shared values, the statement expressed concern over a small subset acting contrary to those principles, a disturbing example of which was seen on Friday. The clubs emphasize the importance of ensuring a safe environment for fans at home games and plan to enhance collaboration with security authorities to increase visible supervision during events.
Tampere’s Mayor Kalervo Kummola has also urged the clubs to address disruptions, suggesting measures such as imposing bans on troublesome individuals.
