Approximately a year ago, an unusual period began along the Finnish-Russian border. On November 18, 2023, the Finnish government decided to close the most active border crossings to passenger traffic. Following this action, all border points along the eastern frontier were subsequently shut, and they have remained closed since, with only brief reopening attempts.

The closure marked an end to various everyday interactions between the residents of Finland and Russia. For instance, before the closure, the border crossing at Nuijamaa, just a 25-kilometer drive from Lappeenranta, was bustling with Russian tourists who contributed nearly a million euros daily to local businesses. With the border sealed, Lappeenranta saw a significant drop in economic activity, prompting concern among local merchants.

Residents like Sami Jokelainen from Lappeenranta are open to limited border reopening for those with property or family ties on either side. In Kuhmo, the Vartius border crossing was fully closed as of November 23, 2023, heightening fears among locals about unknown individuals crossing over.

Sylvi Pöllänen, a local, expressed her relief after being reassured by border guards, highlighting their presence as a source of security. The impact of the closure extended to various businesses, including antique shops, which faced dwindling customer numbers due to the loss of Russian clientele.

Despite the circumstances, there is a sense of hope among some locals, particularly for the many Russian residents with ties in Finland, who yearn for easier access across the border in the future.
