Lapinlahti councilor Jorma Ruotsalainen implicated in major poaching scandal in North Savo
A local councilor from Lapinlahti has been implicated in a significant poaching scandal uncovered in North Savo. Jorma Ruotsalainen, a member of the Social Democratic Party, faces serious charges related to five counts of aggravated hunting offenses. The specific nature of the allegations is yet to be disclosed.
The chairperson of the Lapinlahti municipal council, Minna Rissanen, noted that Ruotsalainen’s position and ongoing role as a councilor will be discussed during a council meeting scheduled for December 16. Ruotsalainen has indicated he will not resign from his position, citing that the legal proceedings are still underway.
He has denied the most severe accusations, asserting that he participated in activities he initially believed were lawful lynx and fox hunts. He questions how his involvement could be classified as serious wrongdoing if he was not responsible for any illegal actions that occurred during these hunts.
One incident began as a lynx hunt but reportedly culminated in the shooting of a protected wolf. Ruotsalainen claims he has never killed a legally protected animal.
The case involves 31 individuals accused of poaching violations in Lapinlahti from 2019 to 2023. The prosecution has leveled 14 counts of aggravated hunting crimes, along with several other serious charges, including illegal handling of protected species and gun-related offenses.
The police have categorized this case as the most extensive poaching incident reported in Finland to date. Although local councilors can be suspended from their duties during legal processes, they cannot be removed unless sentenced to a minimum of six months in prison for a criminal offense. Severe poaching violations can result in sentences of up to four years.
