In the lead-up to the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iceland, voters now have the opportunity to assess which political party or candidate aligns best with their views through an interactive quiz launched by RÚV. The quiz, which debuted recently, is more comprehensive than previous iterations and allows participants to compare their opinions with those of nearly 700 candidates across various parties.
The quiz provides insights into the positions of the candidates on a range of political statements and issues, offering voters a unique way to evaluate their political preferences. For the first time, candidates were allowed to respond directly, enabling a distinct comparison between their answers and party positions.
Given the shortened campaign period, political candidates face the challenge of effectively communicating their messages. Voters, too, are under pressure to form opinions quickly, particularly on pressing topics such as immigration and economic policy. RÚV’s web director highlighted the importance of media support in helping voters navigate these intricate issues.
This year’s version of the quiz includes 27 questions that cover a spectrum of political topics, reflecting the increased engagement from candidates. Each candidate has a dedicated page showcasing their responses along with background information, enabling voters to make informed decisions.
RÚV collaborated with its Nordic counterparts, particularly Sweden’s SVT, which has successfully implemented similar political quizzes. Using an established algorithm, RÚV was able to develop an accessible and effective quiz in a relatively short timeframe. The quiz remains available until the elections on November 30, 2024, providing ongoing assistance to voters as they prepare to cast their ballots.
