Vacant mayor position in Vágur as political tensions rise

The position of mayor in Vágur remains vacant as of January 1.

Initially, it was expected that Levi Mørk from the Social Democratic Party would assume the role; however, just before the signing of a coalition agreement between the Social Democrats and the Union Party, Bjarni Johansen, also from the Social Democrats, announced he would not sign the agreement.

Efforts to get a comment from Bjarni Johansen, the current mayor, have been unsuccessful as he has yet to provide any remarks.

Bjarni Johansen plans to continue as mayor in alliance with the Republic Party after January 1. Attempts to reach comments from other political figures, including Arna G. Johansen of the southern Social Democratic group, Arna Brattaberg who was elected on list E, and Bárður G. Nielsen from the Republic Party were also met with silence.

Aksel V. Johannesen, the Prime Minister and chairman of the Social Democrats, intends to respond to inquiries later in the day.

Levi Mørk, who was expected to take on the mayor’s role, has called on the Social Democrats to clarify the next steps following Bjarni Johansen’s collaboration with the Republic Party.

During the municipal council’s organizational meeting, neither any members from the Union Party nor Levi Mørk or Rakul Nolsøe from the Social Democrats were present.

In the recent local elections, Levi Mørk emerged as the top candidate, securing 131 personal votes, while Bjarni Johansen followed closely with 108. The elections resulted in four representatives for the Republic Party, three for the Social Democrats, and two for the Union Party, leaving the Republic Party one member short of a majority, a gap now filled by Bjarni Johansen. The newly elected council is set to convene on Wednesday at 6 PM.
