The parliamentary sessions in Iceland concluded today, just before noon, as the country prepares for upcoming elections on November 30. The agenda included significant bills such as the government’s budget proposal, a one-time payment for pensioners, and a proposal concerning housing purchases in Grindavík.

Birgir Ármannsson, the Speaker of the Althing, bid farewell to fellow members, announcing that he will not seek reelection in the upcoming vote. He has been a representative since 2003 and held his last meeting with party leaders this morning, where he was honored with cakes and warm farewells.

At the Althing today, twelve items are on the agenda, including the budget proposal and changes to immigration laws. Party leaders had previously agreed to conclude parliamentary work mid-month in anticipation of the elections. Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, leader of the Socialist Party, will also address her work and policies in an evening program.

In other political developments, the Left-Green Movement presented their campaign priorities, focusing on issues like housing, health care, and environmental protection. Meanwhile, voters in Tenerife experienced a more casual voting environment, heading to polling stations in shorts. The Icelandic Artists’ Alliance, in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts, hosted a discussion about culture and the arts, inviting political representatives to engage with these critical topics ahead of the elections.

With just twelve days left until the election, the political landscape is more active than ever as various parties rally their supporters and address pressing issues within the community.
