Since the last update of its party program in 2013, the Social Democrats in Sweden have faced numerous significant changes. Europe has experienced a refugee crisis, Donald Trump has been elected president of the United States twice, and there has been a wave of organized crime and terrorism across Europe, including in Sweden.

Under the leadership of Magdalena Andersson, the party is acknowledging the shifting societal landscape. Andersson stated in a press briefing that there is a greater potential for social democracy today, highlighting issues such as immigration, crime, and growing disparities in society. She emphasized the party’s ambition to be a central force in Sweden’s societal development. Notably, crime, which was absent from the previous program, now receives focused attention. The new platform details a shift in criminal policy with stricter penalties for serious offenses through 16 outlined measures.

In terms of immigration, the party’s stance has transformed significantly. While they once supported “generous and regulated immigration” in 2013, they now call for a “tight Swedish migration policy” and increased requirements for Swedish language proficiency.

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, alongside Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO, have prompted a reevaluation of Sweden’s traditional stance on military alliances. The party’s previous optimism regarding democracy is now tempered by concerns, as reflected in the new title “Democracy is Challenged.”

Despite these shifts, some positions remain unchanged, such as the party’s anti-capitalist ideology and the intention to abolish the monarchy. The draft party program is set for review before its final approval at the party congress in May next year.
