A major fire at an egg production facility in Vogar, located on the Vatnsleysuströnd, has led to the tragic death of approximately six thousand birds. Emergency services were able to extinguish the blaze at the Nesbúi facility, but the damage is significant. Firefighters are currently monitoring the area to prevent any potential flare-ups.
The alarm was raised around midnight, prompting an immediate response from all available firefighting units in the region, as well as additional support from the nearby Grindavík fire department. When crews arrived, flames were visible coming from the roof of one of the buildings. Fortunately, the firefighters managed to contain the fire to a single structure, preventing it from spreading to others, which remain undamaged. No injuries to people occurred during the incident.
Initial assessments indicate that the massive fire and the subsequent smoke led to the loss of a substantial number of poultry at one of the largest egg production facilities in the country. Authorities will maintain a presence at the site through the morning to ensure any remaining risks are managed effectively. Fire officials have stated that the cause of the fire is currently unclear, and an investigation is underway.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
