A significant fire at the Nesbú egg farm in Vogar, located on Vatnsleysuströnd, has been extinguished after emergency services responded promptly. The fire caused substantial damage, reportedly leading to the death of thousands of chickens. Firefighters remain on-site to ensure that the flames do not reignite as investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

Late-night reports led to the mobilization of all available firefighters from Suðurnes and support from Grindavík’s fire department. Upon arrival, crews found a considerable blaze in one of the farm’s buildings. A fire chief on the scene stated that while one structure was completely destroyed, they successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other buildings. Fortunately, there were no threats to human safety.

Early estimates suggest that around 6,000 chickens may have perished from the fire and smoke. A continuous presence will remain at the site to address any resurgence of flames. Further assessments will take place as daylight reveals the full extent of the damage.

Onlookers reported significant flames and smoke rising from the facility, raising concerns for the animals housed there. As investigations proceed, fire crews have been commended for their quick and effective response in preventing a more extensive disaster.
