Helsinki Court dismisses severe pollution charges but convicts car repair shop owner of basic environmental violations
The Helsinki Court of Appeals dismissed a car repair shop owner’s charges of severe environmental pollution linked to an oil spill in the Maunulanpuron area. Previously, the District Court had sentenced the man to over two years in prison after determining that his repair shop had released more than 1,300 liters of oil into the stormwater drainage system, which eventually flowed into the Maunulanpuro stream and surrounding Central Park in 2016. The repair shop ceased operations in August 2020.
The Court of Appeals found substantial doubt regarding the origin of the oil spill. However, they convicted the man of basic environmental pollution for failing to maintain records of waste oil and neglecting proper waste management practices. Additionally, he was found guilty of registration-related offenses and serious accounting violations, similar to the District Court ruling. As a result, he received an eight-month suspended sentence.
In a related case, another individual received a suspended sentence for a registration-related offense, but the Court of Appeals reduced his punishment to daily fines.
