Evi Kähkönen, who suffers from debilitating migraines, turns to energy drinks along with pain relievers whenever she feels the onset of a migraine. For her, a can of energy drink plays a crucial role in managing her condition. “A migraine for me can last up to two weeks at its worst. I think one energy drink is a small price to pay to alleviate the pain,” she explains.
Many, like Kähkönen, have discovered a growing trend on social media, suggesting that energy drinks can aid in migraine relief. However, scientific research on this topic is still limited. Neurologist Matti Ilmavirta highlights that he frequently encounters patients who report positive effects from energy drinks in their pain management. These drinks may enhance the effectiveness of pain medications and can occasionally prevent the onset of a migraine.
Nevertheless, the scientific rationale behind this remains unclear. Ilmavirta, who has treated hundreds of migraine patients over the years, points to the stimulating effects of caffeine and taurine as potential factors that can alleviate migraine symptoms. Caffeine is known for its ability to relieve migraine headaches in some individuals due to its narrowing effect on blood vessels.
However, responses to these drinks can vary widely. Some people find relief from regular energy drinks, while others report that sweetened alternatives trigger their migraines. Ilmavirta emphasizes that energy drinks should not be seen as a standalone treatment for migraines.
He also mentions that there are non-caffeinated methods for managing migraines, including simply drinking more water. While energy drinks can help some, they may also exacerbate migraine symptoms in others, making individual tolerance crucial.
