Experts warn that Norway is inadequately prepared for the future impacts of extreme weather, with significant flooding, landslides, and road closures already being reported across the country. Climate change is expected to exacerbate these events in the coming years. Local leaders, including Finnmark’s county mayor, Hans-Jacob Bønå, have criticized the government for insufficient measures to ensure road safety and preparedness in regions vulnerable to such incidents.

In December 2023, Harstad municipality took a proactive step by establishing a food emergency stockpile, a pioneering initiative among Norwegian municipalities. However, some experts find it alarming that not more areas have similar provisions. They believe these preparations are crucial as natural disasters become more frequent, potentially endangering lives and health.

Recent instances of extreme snowfall and rainfall have isolated hundreds of residents in northern communities such as Gamvik and Lyngen. Calls for more substantial government involvement in safeguarding critical infrastructure have intensified, especially as climate-related risks grow more commonplace.

Despite the acknowledgment of these challenges, some regional leaders express skepticism about the government’s commitment to supporting local preparedness efforts. A parliamentary hearing on flood and landslide management is set to take place, and experts expect decisive action from policymakers to address the emerging risks.

The Finnish province is striving to develop more efficient methods of fortifying roads against extreme weather challenges. Collaborations have begun on innovative modular avalanche protective systems that promise to expedite and economize the construction process, potentially enhancing road safety more effectively in the future.
