The parent association of the Reykjavík School is calling for a swift resolution to the ongoing wage dispute between teachers and the government. The association stresses that the potential teacher strike, scheduled to commence on November 18 and last until December 20 if no agreement is reached, could have significant detrimental effects on students.

In a recent resolution, the parent organization expressed its support and respect for the teachers’ demands. They emphasized that the students have no influence over the resolution of the dispute and should not be made to bear its consequences. Such a situation might severely impact the educational experience and well-being of the students.

The association’s concerns are underscored by a statement from the Children’s Ombudsman, which highlighted that students affected by the strikes could miss out on their right to education, thereby being placed at a disadvantage compared to their peers. Furthermore, increased absenteeism could lead to a reluctance to attend school, as the educational environment serves as a safe haven for many children.

The parent organization insists that all parties involved must work diligently towards resolving the conflict quickly to minimize its impact on the students. While recognizing the complexity of settling wage agreements and respecting previous contracts, they urge for immediate attention to this pressing matter.

This plea has been directed at various officials, including leaders of the teachers’ union and government negotiation committees, highlighting the various stakeholders’ roles in reaching a timely solution. The parent association remains committed to supporting the teachers, acknowledging the invaluable contributions they make to society.
