Landslide prompts safety concerns on road between Hnífsdalur and Ísafjörður in Iceland
A significant landslide occurred today on the road connecting Hnífsdalur and Ísafjörður, prompting concerns about safety among local residents. A man living approximately 300 meters from the disaster zone expressed confidence that his home would remain unaffected, attributing its secure location to the surrounding terrain.
The landslide struck shortly after 3 PM, dislodging part of a roadside barrier. Measuring about two meters in height and sixty meters in width, it is the largest landslide to have taken place in the area within the last 24 hours. In response to the event, highway staff commenced cleanup efforts, but the arrival of subsequent smaller slides led authorities to close the road for the evening and into the night. A state of uncertainty has been declared due to the heightened risk of additional landslides and rockfalls.
A nearby resident, who felt the impact, noted that the largest slide happened close to his home, and he recalled hearing the rumbling sounds clearly. Despite the unsettling events, he remarked on the stability of his property, crediting the hills behind his house for directing the debris away.
Meanwhile, emergency response stations are being set up in Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík for individuals stranded by the road closures. Two employees who work with the resident are currently unable to leave due to the lockdown, but he assured that they would remain safe with him until the situation improves. Maintaining a stoic approach, he reflected, “As long as one is reasonably safe inside the house, it’s all manageable.”
