The Suðuroy Tunnel is poised to connect the islands significantly for many years to come. However, there are pressing concerns regarding the political plans to construct the tunnel, as highlighted by the national bank’s financial assessments.

According to projections, the funding requirement for the venture will reach approximately six billion kroner over the next decade, extending until 2035, unless proactive measures are taken. The national bank outlined these concerns in a report accompanying a legislative proposal for the tunnel’s development.

The bank deems it impractical to proceed with the tunnel project in its current form, especially if decisions are made prior to implementing essential measures aimed at stabilizing public finances.

A discussion featuring the bank’s director provided insights into the financial implications and necessary precautions tied to the project. The concerns raised underscore the importance of considering fiscal stability alongside ambitious infrastructure plans.
